Green Therma and Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern Partner to Advance Low-Risk Geothermal Heat in Germany

Green Therma has signed a Letter of Intent with SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern Versorgungs-AG to assess the deployment of closed-loop geothermal heat in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The collaboration will evaluate how Green Therma’s Heat4Ever™ solution can supply geothermal heat into SWK’s 105 km district heating network as part of SWK’s ambition to achieve CO₂-neutral heat by 2045.

Unlike conventional hydrothermal systems, which rely on reservoir permeability and fluid flow performance, Heat4Ever™ operates as a closed-loop solution designed to significantly reduce subsurface and production risk. This approach improves predictability and supply security, reinforcing the commercial and operational reliability that utilities require when transitioning to low-carbon heat.

“The energy transition requires scalable solutions with reduced geological risk and strong operational predictability. Our Heat4Ever™ technology is designed to deliver exactly that — enabling utilities to integrate geothermal heat with greater confidence,” says Jørgen Rasmussen, CEO of Green Therma.

The joint feasibility study will include evaluation of geological and geophysical data, assessment of potential well locations, and a first-pass levelized cost of heat analysis. SWK recently completed a 151 km² 3D seismic survey within the “Lutrina” license area, providing a strong technical foundation for the assessment.

“SWK is committed to transforming its heat supply towards climate neutrality while maintaining high reliability for our customers. The cooperation with Green Therma allows us to evaluate an innovative closed-loop geothermal solution that could strengthen supply resilience and reduce geological risk in our transition,” says Dr. Arvid Blume, CEO of SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern.

Subject to positive results, the parties will discuss next steps toward a potential multi-well geothermal heat project.
